Depth On Display For Seahawks At ECU Meet

GREENVILLE, North Carolina – The UNCW track and field teams turned in several strong performances up and down the roster as the Bill Carson Invitational wrapped up late Saturday at East Carolina's Bate Foundation Track & Field Facility.
 
"The huge takeaway from today's meet was the level of intent that everyone brought to every rep," said Jeff Klaves, UNCW's fourth-year head coach. "You could hear that from the cheering to the competing and from all of the friends and families that came out.
 
"This meet was a big turning point in our season. We now start to make the shift to the championship segment of the season. I want to thank everyone that came out to support us and look forward to building on this. Today truly showed that we're building a strong program."
 
The Seahawks picked up a pair of first place finishes on Saturday. Junior Kendall Hobbs won the 5,000 Meters (17:36.83) and freshman Bailey Tart took the women's pole vault (11-05.75).
 
In breakthrough performances on the day, freshman La'Tecyia Johnson came in third place in the women's long jump and freshman Layna West finished eighth in the women's javelin. Senior Taylen West and freshman Maverick Shotwell made their season debuts in the 100 meters and  4x100 and 4x400 relays.
 
Host East Carolina was joined by UNCW, The Citadel, Appalachian State and Mount Olive in the two-day meet.
 
The Seahawks make their fifth appearance of the outdoor season next weekend, Apr. 6-8, 2023, at the Duke Invitational in Durham, N.C.
