Diamond Hawks Clip Charlotte On Thach Homer

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – Freshman Tanner Thach's two-run homer in the top of the seventh proved to be the difference as UNCW powered past Charlotte, 11-9, on Wednesday at Atrium Health Ballpark in downtown Kannapolis.

The Seahawks pushed their winning streak to three and improved to 7-6 on the season. Charlotte, meanwhile, slid to 5-8 with its fourth straight loss.

Thach led the Seahawk offense with four runs batted in on three hits, including his fifth round tripper of the season. Kevin Pitarra added a career-high three hits and knocked in three runs, also a career-high. Dillon Lifrieri doubled twice and Alec DeMartino and Jac Croom collected two hits apiece. DeMartino and Lifrieri both scored three runs.

Junior Ethan Chenault held the 49ers scoreless over his 2.2 innings of relief and finished with six strikeouts. Freshman Aubrey Smith (1-0) received the win.

Brandon Stahlman had two hits for Charlotte and Josh Patrick added two hits and three RBIs.

Paxton Thompson (1-1) took the loss after allowing Thach's homer in the seventh.

UNCW opens Colonial Athletic Association play this weekend when they host Monmouth beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday.

How it happened: In the seventh inning Lifreiri reached safely on a Charlotte fielding error with one out. Thach followed one batter later with a round tripper to right off a 2-2 offering from Thompson to give UNCW an 11-9 lead.
