DeBarber Paces Thinclads at Bill Carson Invitational

GREENVILLE, North Carolina – Sophomore Ryan DeBarber set personal bests on all three of his throws in the men's javelin on Friday as the UNCW men's track and field team opened up action in East Carolina's Bill Carson Invitational on Friday at the Bate Foundation Track & Field Facility.
 
DeBarber, from Enfield, Conn., captured first place in the javelin competition with his throw of 216-8 in windy conditions. "Things were really clicking for Ryan," said Jeff Klaves, UNCW's fourth-year head coach. "To throw 66 meters is a testament to all of the hard work he's put in. We're very excited for him."
 
DeBarber was one of four student-athletes competing on the first day of the meet. The remainder of the team is scheduled to compete throughout the day on Saturday.
 
"We were really excited about today," Klaves added. "We got some great work in. Kenny King had a great series of consistent throws and we're very excited about what he's building. Ryan Kobziak is working on being a decathlete. Jesse Helton did a great job of making adjustments in the discus in windy conditions.
 
"All in all, we were very proud of day one. We're looking forward to having the rest of the team here tomorrow and working on the details."
 
The five teams competing in the two-day meet include host East Carolina, UNCW, The Citadel, Appalachian State and Mount Olive.
