Wainwright Receives Gene Bartow Award

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Legendary UNCW head coach Jerry Wainwright has been recognized for his significant contributions to college basketball as recipient of the Gene Bartow Award by CollegeInsider.com.

The Berwyn, Ill., native coached the Seahawks for eight seasons from 1995-2002 and guided the Colonial Athletic Association club to four postseason berths, including the school's first NCAA appearance in 2000 and another NCAA bid in 2002. Wainwright fashioned a 136-103 record in the Port City and remains one of the program's most revered head coaches.

Wainwright's 2002 club is the only team in the program's history to win a game in the NCAA Tournament after upsetting Southern California, 93-89, in overtime on March 14, 2002, in Sacramento.

After departing the Seahawk program, Wainwright went on to serve as head coach at Richmond and DePaul. He is one of the most popular speakers in college basketball circles today.

The Gene Bartow Award is presented annually to a current or former coach for his contributions to the game. It measures a coach's win-loss record but also the impact made on his players, school and community.

The award is named in honor of Gene Bartow, who compiled a 647-353 record at Memphis State, UCLA and the University of Alabama-Birmingham. He led Memphis State to the 1973 championship game, steered UCLA to the Final Four and built UAB into a nationally-known program.

Bartow won four Sun Belt Tournament and three regular season titles during his 17 years at UAB, leading the Blazers to a 350-193 record and seven consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. Bartow died in 2012 at the age of 81 following a two-year battle with stomach cancer.

Former North Carolina head coach Roy Williams, who won 903 games in 33 years at Kansas and UNC, was the 2022 recipient of the award.
