Anderson, Hunter Set School Records

RALEIGH, North Carolina – Juniors Nickolis Anderson and Jayda Hunter smashed school records as the UNCW track and field teams wrapped up the second day of the Raleigh Relays on Friday at NC State's Paul Derr Track & Field Facility.
 
Anderson, from Hubert, N.C., clocked a 46.59 to capture first place in the 400 meters ahead of N.C. Central's Donnell Carter at 46.91. Anderson snapped the longtime record of 46.77 set by Tyson Garden at the IC4A Championships on May 21, 2000.
 
Anderson paced three season-best performances for the Seahawks in the 400m. In addition to his time, Cooper Wright clocked a 47.48 for sixth place and Dalton Zimmerman went 48.91 for 32nd place. Wright's time was the eight best on the school's all-time list.
 
Hunter, from Jacksonville, N.C., continued her fast start this spring by jumping 41-3 for fourth place in the women's triple jump. She broke the school record of 40-07.50 set by Victoria Whimple on April 17, 2021, at the South Carolina Open.
 
Graduate student Brynn Sheffield also ran a season best in the 100 meters, finishing in 24th place with a time of 11.94.
 
"Today's performances show that hard work pays off," said fourth-year head coach Jeff Klaves. "The performances are a testament to the hard work that these athletes have put in over the last few years. Today is an example of our small but elite culture as we continue to push the mark in our program."
 
Twelve Seahawks competed on Friday's second day of the competition after Ryan DeBarber and Miles Higgins took part in the men's javelin on Thursday.
