UNCW Drops 11-8 Decision In Extras To Wolfpack

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Despite rallying in the ninth to force extra innings, UNCW was unable to finish off NC State as the Wolfpack scored three in the top of the 10th inning to top the Seahawks, 11-8, on Tuesday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks saw their four-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 13-8 on the season. The 24th-ranked Wolfpack, meanwhile, raised its record to 16-5.

Justin Lawson (3-0) was credited with the win for the Wolfpack while five players had two-hit evenings. LuJames Groover III hit his third home run of the season while Kalae Harrison had two hits and knocked in two runs.

UNCW's Brett Banks (0-1) took the loss for the Seahawks despite season-highs with 3.1 innings pitched and six strikeouts.

Brock Wills and Dillon Lifrieri had three-hit games while Wills drove in four runs, including the tying runs with two out in the bottom of the ninth. John Newton finished with two hits and two runs batted in as UNCW out-hit the Wolfpack, 14-13.

The Seahawks return to Colonial Athletic Association play this weekend with three games at conference newcomer Stony Brook beginning on Friday.

How it happened: In the top of the 10th with one out, Harrison drew a one-out walk and Groover was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Cannon Peebles followed with a ground ball to first and Groover was forced at second. The relay throw to first was just out of the reach of Banks covering first and Harrison scored on the play. Jacob Cozart followed with an RBI single to right and scored one batter later on a single through the left side to make it 11-8.

Notes: Jac Croom's hitting streak came to an end with a hitless evening … NCSU finished with eight two-out hits and seven two-out RBIs … Wills and Newton both had two-out RBIs for UNCW … For Wills, it was his third three-hit game of the season and a season-high four RBIs.
