Shafer Wins Third Straight Start

UNCW splits twinbill with Stony Brook

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Jacob Shafer earned his third consecutive win and pitched into the seventh inning for the third time this season as UNCW opened a Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader with a 7-2 win at Stony Brook on Friday. The Seawolves salvaged a split with a 7-4 victory in the nightcap.

The Seahawks improved to 14-9 on the season and 6-2 in the league. Stony Brook, meanwhile, saw its records move to 8-12 and 2-3.

Shafer (4-1) held the Seawolves hitless for the first 4.1 innings before SBU managed an infield single. The righthander surrendered just one run on two hits and a pair of walks while striking out five in 6.2 innings.

Trevor Marsh paced the Seahawks with three hits and a walk. He belted his seventh home run of the season in the second inning to give UNCW an early 1-0 lead. Dillon Lifrieri added two hits and a pair of runs batted in while Brock Wills and Jac Croom also collected two hits apiece.

UNCW built a 4-0 lead in the fourth inning with a Lifrieri two-run single keying a three-run inning.

John Newton made it 7-0 in the top of the seventh with an RBI double to right that score Croom from first.

Ben Fero (1-3) was tagged for six runs in 5.2 innings for the loss.

Brett Paulsen had an RBI single in the seventh to avert the shutout for the Seawolves.

In the nightcap, Eric fox collected three hits, including a pair of doubles, to back the 4.1 innings of one-run relief by Josh O'Neill (2-3). UNCW broke a 3-all deadlock in the seventh on a home run by Lifrieri, but the Seawolves answered in the bottom of the inning and tied the game on a wild pitch.

SBU added three runs in the bottom of the eighth with a two-run triple from Matt Miceli keying the go-ahead inning.

Jason Hudak (0-1) took the loss in relief.

The teams played a doubleheader on Friday because of expected inclement weather. The final game of the series will be Sunday at noon.
