It's A Series Win For the Diamond Hawks

UNCW tops Towson, 10-5, to clinch the weekend series

TOWSON, Md. – UNCW earned its second Colonial Athletic Association series win on Saturday as the Seahawks scored double digits for the ninth time this season in a 10-5 win at Towson.

With their third straight win, the Seahawks improved to 12-7 on the season and 4-1 in the CAA. The Tigers, meanwhile, saw their record drop to 6-14 and 1-4.

UNCW was led by Alec DeMartino with three hits while John Newton and Bryan Arendt both had two hits and two runs batted in. Brock Wills had two hits and scored twice. Arendt also swiped two bases as UNCW stole five bases on the afternoon.

Matt Gaither (3-1) was credited with the win in relief, going three-plus innings, allowing two hits and two runs, both unearned. Brett Banks closed out his second save of the season.

Elijah Dickerson had two hits for the Tigers, who managed seven hits in the game.

Reliever Matt Lynch (0-2) was saddled with the loss.

The series concludes on Sunday with a 1 p.m. start.

How it happened: UNCW broke open a two-all deadlock in the fifth with three runs, all coming with two outs. Jac Croom ignited the rally with a walk and scored one batter later on a Newton double off the wall in left center. A walk to Trevor Marsh put runners on first and second for Arendt, who singled to right to score Newton as Marsh raced around to third. Marsh would score the following batter on a balk for a 5-2 lead.
