Break Out The Brooms!! Seahawks Sweep Towson

TOWSON, Md. – Zane Taylor tossed seven shutout innings and Jac Croom collected four hits for a second time in Colonial Athletic Association action this season as UNCW pounded Towson, 12-2, on Sunday to complete a conference sweep of the Tigers at Schuerholz Park.

The Seahawks posted their first sweep of the season and moved to 5-1 in the league and 13-7 on the season. The Tigers saw their record fall to 6-15 and 1-5.

Taylor (2-1) matched his career-long outing with those seven innings. He walked none and struck out four.

Croom, who raised his batting average to .450 on the season, tied his career-high with four hits and four runs scored. He also drove in two runs. Trevor Marsh added three hits and scored three times. Taber Mongero and Brock Wills finished with two hits apiece and Mongero knocked in two runs. Kevin Pitarra plated three runs on a squeeze bunt and a pair of sac flies.

Starter Brett Seils (1-2) surrendered four runs on four hits and three walks in 1.2 innings of work.

Reyce Curnane had three hits and Bryce Frederick broke up the shutout bid with a two-run home run in the eighth for Towson.

How it happened: UNCW sent 10 hitters to the plate in a four-run second inning and never looked back. Marsh got the Seahawks on the board with a bases-loaded single and Pitarra made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly to right. Mongero and Wills followed with RBI singles to close out the scoring.

Notes: UNCW went 4-0 on the week, averaging 10.5 runs per game … UNCW's last road sweep in conference play was last season at Northeastern (May 13-15) … Croom's hitting streak is now at 13 games … With seven shutout innings on Sunday, Taylor lowered his earned run average to .138 in two conference starts … The Seahawks have won their last 10 games against the Tigers, including the last six at Schuerholz Park … UNCW is tied for first in the league with Elon, both at 5-1.
