UNCW Baseball Races Past Hoyas, 9-3

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Behind the two-hit pitching of Zane Taylor and three extra-base hits from Alec DeMartino, UNCW raced past visiting Georgetown, 9-3, in college baseball action Sunday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks moved to 4-3 on the young season while the Hoyas, who had a four-game winning streak halted with the road loss, dropped to 6-2.

Taylor (1-1) earned the win, allowing three runs over 6.1 innings. He allowed just two hits, walked three and fanned six. Brett Banks notched his first save by striking out three in 2.2 innings of relief.

DeMartino fashioned his second three-hit game of the season, finishing with a pair of doubles and connecting on his first career home run. He scored three runs and knocked in two. Tanner Thach and Ron Evans added two hits apiece.

GU starter Everett Catlett (0-1) was saddled with the loss after allowing five runs, four earned, in two innings of work.

The Hoyas managed just three hits on the afternoon.

UNCW visits nationally-ranked Wake Forest on Feb. 28 for a 5 p.m. start.

How it happened: The Seahawks jumped in front with five runs in the bottom of the second against Catlett. DeMartino opened the inning with a double and scored one batter later on a single to right by Thach. With two out and runners on second and third, Aiden Evens extended the UNCW lead to 3-0 with a two-run single to right center. Two more runs crossed the plate on a wild pitch later in the inning.

Home Runs: UNCW: DeMartino (1, off Keough with one on and two on, 395 feet to left center, 102 exit velocity.

Notes: The Seahawks went 2-2 on the weekend while Georgetown finished 3-1 … Iona finished 1-3 … DeMartino has three doubles on the season and is hitting .529 on the season (9-17) … Ron Evans swiped his team-leading fourth base of the season … Opponents are hitting .175 against Taylor.
