UNCW Comes Up Short In Loss To #3 Demon Deacons

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The third-ranked Demon Deacons plated five runs in the bottom of the first as Wake Forest grabbed an early lead and held off UNCW the rest of the way for an 8-6 win on Tuesday at Gene Hooks Field.

The Demon Deacons ran their winning streak to 10 to open the season with the win while the Seahawks dropped to 4-4.

Brock Wills and Dillon Lifrieri had two hits apiece at the top of the lineup and Jac Croom added two more in the fifth spot. Wills and Trevor Marsh both homered.

UNCW starter Connor Kane (0-1) took the loss in his first collegiate start.

For WFU, Brock Wilken had three hits, including his seventh home run of the season, scored twice and knocked in two.

Reed Mascolo (2-0) was credited with the win after going 4.2 innings. Camden Minacci earned his first save of the season by striking out five over two innings of work.

The Seahawks host Columbia for a four-game series beginning on Friday at 4 p.m.

How it happened: Wake Forest jumped on Kane for five runs in the bottom of the first. Lee doubled in two runs and Houston followed two batters later with a two-run single to make it 5-0.

Home Runs: UNCW: Marsh (2, off Mascolo, solo to CF in the fifth, 425 feet, 112 exit velocity); Wills (1, off Minacci, solo to RF in the 9th, 324 feet, 89 exit velocity); WFU: Wilken (7, off Smith, solo to LF in the fourth, 349 feet, 98 exit velocity)

Notes: With the win, Wake Forest now leads the all-time series, 16-15 … Both teams finished with 10 hits … UNCW's six runs were the most surrendered by the Demon Deacons this season …Lifrieri extended his errorless streak to 69 games.
