UNCW Falls To #19 Virginia, 7-0

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Virginia struck for three runs in the top of the first on a home run by Jake Gelof as the 19th-ranked Cavaliers topped UNCW, 7-0, on Sunday in the Hughes Bros. Challenge at Brooks Field.

UVA closed out the weekend with a perfect 3-0 mark while the Seahawks went 2-1.

UVA freshman Jack O'Connor (1-0) struck out seven in his collegiate debut, going five innings and allowing just a single.

Gelof led the Cavs with three hits and finished with four runs batted in. Ethan O'Donnell added two hits and scored twice.

UNCW starter Zane Taylor (0-1) took the loss after allowing four runs, three earned over five innings.

Trevor Marsh and Tanner Thach had UNCW's two hits on the afternoon.

The Seahawks host Iona and Georgetown next weekend in the Carolina Coastline Classic, beginning on Friday.

How it happened: Griff O'Ferrell drew a walk to lead off the game and O'Donnell followed with a single to left. Gelof followed with his second
round tripper of the season to give UVA a 3-0 lead.

Game Notes: The Cavs scored three in the first and two in the ninth with single runs, both unearned, in the fourth and sixth innings … UNCW's Case Stroup allowed two hits over 2.1 innings of relief … The Seahawks turned their fifth double play of the season … Thach of UNCW opened his collegiate career this weekend hitting .500 (5-10) with a home run, five runs scored and six runs batted in.
