Thach, Arendt Homer In 11-3 Win Over Iona

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW erupted for six runs in the bottom of the third and never looked back as the Seahawks powered past Iona, 11-3, on Friday at Brooks Field on the opening day of the Carolinas Coastline Classic.

The Seahawks pushed their record to 3-1 with the win while the Gaels, who also fell 3-0 to Georgetown earlier in the day, slipped to 1-4 to open the season.

The bottom of the UNCW lineup combined for nine hits and nine runs batted in. Tanner Thach and Bryan Arendt both had two hits, including home runs, while Thach knocked in four runs and Arendt two.

Starter Matt Gaither (1-0) allowed a run on two hits over 5.2 innings for the win.

Iona's Joey Kasper (0-1) took the loss in his first start of the season. He surrendered four runs on two hits and walked four in two innings of work.

Josiah Ragsdale and Nick Forney had two hits apiece for the Gaels and both drove in a run.

The Seahawks play two games on Saturday. UNCW and Georgetown meet at noon and the Seahawks take on Iona at 4 p.m.

How it happened: In the UNCW third, a walk to Trevor Marsh, Ron Evans followed with a hit-by-pitch opened the inning and Thach plated both with a triple to right. Alec DeMartino added an RBI single, Aiden Evans squeezed home a run and Dillon Lifrieri closed out the inning with an RBI double for a 6-0 lead.
