Thach Powers Seahawks In Slugfest Win

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Freshman Tanner Thach homered and drove in five runs in his UNCW debut as the Seahawks rolled out to an early lead and extended their season-opener winning streak to four with a 14-10 win over Ohio at Brooks Field on Friday.

Red-shirt junior Trevor Marsh added a pair of hits and knocked in three runs as UNCW built a 9-4 lead through three innings. Freshman Brock Wills had two hits and scored twice in the leadoff slot.

Alec Patino went 3-for-3 with four runs batted in for the Bobcats while Mason Minzey scored four runs and knocked in two.

Junior reliever Ethan Chenault (1-0) picked up the win, striking out four in 2.1 innings.

Ohio starter Brendan Broder (0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing nine runs, eight earned, in two-plus innings of work.

Up next: The Seahawks and Navy will play at 5 p.m. while Virginia and Ohio will start at 1 p.m. The 10:30 game between Ohio and UNCW has been canceled.

How it happened: UNCW sent eight hitters to the plate in the bottom of the first and five of them came across the plate. Wills opened the inning by getting hit by a pitch and Jac Croom followed with a triple off the wall in right, scoring Wills. Ronald Evans drew a walk to put runners on the corners for Marsh, who plated the second run with a sac fly to left. Thach completed the scoring with a home run to left on a 2-2 offering from Order for a 5-0 lead.

Game Notes: UNCW head coach Randy Hood is now 4-0 in season openers … 14 runs for UNCW were the most since 2016 (15-2 win over Western Carolina) in a season opener … UNCW scored in each of the five innings … UNCW had seven hits with runners in scoring position … The Seahawks used six pitchers on the evening … The game was pushed back to a 7 p.m. start due to rain.
