Shafer, UNCW Roll Past Midshipmen, 8-0

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Jacob Shafer tossed seven shutout innings and Alec DeMartino collected three hits as UNCW blanked visiting Navy, 8-0, on Saturday at Brooks Field in the Hughes Bros. Challenge.

The Seahawks improved to 2-0 while the Midshipmen dropped to 0-2.

Shafer's seven innings were a career-long and he tied his career high with eight strikeouts. He scattered five hits and picked up the win.

DeMartino, meanwhile, made the most of his first collegiate start by going 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two driven in. Adding two-hit games for UNCW were Trevor Marsh, Tanner Thach, John Newton and Kevin Pitarra. Marsh belted his first homer of the season when he led off the sixth inning.

Matthew Shirah (0-1) took the loss for Navy despite allowing no earned runs over 4.2 innings.

Brock Murth had two hits for Navy, who mustered just seven singles on the afternoon.

The Seahawks conclude their opening weekend with a 3 p.m. start against 19th-ranked Virginia.

How It happened: UNCW jumped on Shirah for a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the first. Brock Wills singled to lead off the frame and Jac Croom followed with a single of his own. Ron Evans broke the ice with a RBI single that plated Wills. DeMartino pushed the second run across with an infield single two batters later.

Game Notes: UNCW improved to 3-0 all-time against Navy, which was a member of the Colonial Athletic Association, but not in baseball … The Seahawks turned three double plays on the game … Navy was 1-for-9 with RISP while the Seahawks had seven hits with RISP … Croom has a seven-game hitting streak dating back to last season … Ron Evans stole his team-leading third base of the season … UNCW has swiped six bases through two games.
