Seahawks Host Huskies In Homecoming Game

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – With the regular season winding down and the Colonial Athletic Association's post-season tournament quickly approaching, UNCW and Northeastern collide on Saturday in the annual homecoming game at Trask Coliseum.

The Seahawks (19-7, 9-4) and Huskies (8-15, 4-8) battle for the only time this season in a 7 p.m. tip at Trask Coliseum. In fact, UNCW will be facing four of its last five opponents just once this season due to the CAA's scheduling matrix.

Saturday's game can be heard on 95.9 FM The Breeze, with play-by-play voice Mike Vaccaro on the call, beginning at 6:45 p.m. Video is available on FloSports.com.

The Seahawks hold down fourth place in the 13-team circuit. Charleston (11-2) and Hofstra (11-2) sit atop the heap and Towson (9-3) stands third.

Both teams are coming off losses to the CAA's co-leaders on Wednesday. The Seahawks fell to Charleston, 93-61, in a battle between the two regional rivals at TD Arena in Charleston. The Huskies, meanwhile, dropped a 72-53 decision to Hofstra in Boston.

The Seahawks struggled in Charleston, falling behind late in the first half and suffering their worst conference setback in the Takayo Siddle Era. The Cougars shot 52.5 percent and forced 18 turnovers to sweep the regular season series for the first time since 2019.

The Huskies also ran into a hot shooting Hofstra team at Matthews Arena. The Pride built a 37-29 lead at intermission and three starters reached double figures in the road victory. Redshirt senior guard Tyler Thomas paced Hofstra with 18 points and CAA scoring leader Aaron Estrada finished with 13.

The Seahawks and Huskies played twice in a four-day span one year ago. In the last matchup, Jaylen Sims pumped in a team-high 20 points and sank the game-clinching free throws in the final two minutes to lift UNCW to a victory on Jan. 27, 2022, at Trask Coliseum. The versatile Sims notched game-high scoring honors on 7-of-11 shooting and 4-of-5 at the free throw line. Junior guard Shykeim Phillips contributed 17 and graduate guard Jaylen Fornes had 14 off the bench for the Seahawks, who shot 50.9 percent on the night.

Saturday's contest marks the 33rd meeting between the Seahawks and Huskies. NU owns a 17-15 advantage in the series. The Huskies have won seven of the last 10 games between the two teams, but UNCW has taken three of the last four matchups.

The 2022-23 club is attempting to become the ninth team in Seahawk history to reach 20 wins. UNCW has featured back-to-back 20-win seasons twice.

The Seahawks stand 9-2 at home this season and routed North Carolina A&T, 87-63, on Feb. 2, 2023, in their last home contest. The Seahawks have won their nine games at Trask Coliseum by an average of 20.4 ppg.

In the last 15 years, the Seahawks are 10-4 in homecoming games, with no game played during the COVID-19 season of 2020-21. UNCW has won its last two homecoming contests

Following Saturday's clash, UNCW hits the road for its final two away games of the regular season at Drexel (Feb. 16) and Delaware (Feb. 18).
