Seahawks Take Aim At School Record

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Throughout UNCW's record-tying 12-game winning streak, third-year head coach Takayo Siddle has stressed the "one game at a time" approach with his men's basketball team. That mantra will be severely tested early Saturday when the Seahawks pay their first visit to the Corbett Sports Center as a league rival to North Carolina A&T's high-flying Aggies.

The Seahawks, 13-3 overall and 3-0 in the Colonial Athletic Association, put their hot streak on the line in a 2 p.m. tip in Greensboro. The Aggies, 6-10 and 1-2, are looking to earn a split of their two-game homestand with the Seahawks and Charleston.

The matchup wraps up a stretch of four road games in five outings for the Seahawks, who return to the coast on Wednesday (Jan. 11) to entertain the No. 23 Cougars at Trask Coliseum.

The UNCW-N.C. A&T clash can be heard on 95.9 FM The Breeze, with play-by-play voice Mike Vaccaro on the call, beginning at 1:45 p.m. Video is available on FloSports.com.

N.C. A&T is led by Interim Head Coach Phillip Shumpert, who was named to lead the program on Aug. 18, 2022, following the departure of Will Jones. Shumpert served as an assistant coach for Will Jones for three years and brings extensive high school and college coaching experience to N.C. A&T's inaugural season in the CAA.

N.C. A&T is looking for a bounce back from a 92-79 defeat to Charleston on Wednesday. The Cougars used a 9-0 spurt at the midway point of the first half to break away and coasted past the Aggies behind Dalton Bolon's 22 points. Sophomore guard Kam Woods exploded for 30 points and played all 40 minutes for the Aggies, who have dropped five of their last six outings.

The two state foes resume their series for the first time in 13 years and square off for the 21st time. N.C. A&T owns a 5-3 record vs. the Seahawks at the Corbett Sports Center, where the first matchup was played on Jan. 30, 1980. The Aggies lead the series overall by an 11-9 margin and have claimed seven of the last 10 meetings. The last two games have been decided in overtime (1991 and 2010) and the series has featured five OT contests overall.

In the last matchup between the two teams on Nov. 23, 2010, sophomore forward Austin Witter drained two critical three-pointers in overtime to help N.C. A&T slip past UNCW, 84-79. The Aggies outscored the Seahawks in overtime, 15-10, dropping UNCW to 3-5 in Greensboro.

Woods, N.C. A&T's top scorer at 18.2 ppg, has attempted 235 field goals for an average of 15.6 per game - 71 more attempts than UNCW's Trazarien White, who has 164 attempts in 2022-23. A transfer from Troy, Woods faced the Seahawks in the Mako Medical Asheville Classic on Nov. 28, 2020, gathering eight points and four rebounds in a 73-50 loss to the Seahawks at UNC Asheville's Kimmel Arena.

During their extended streak, the Seahawks are limiting opponents to 60.3 ppg and holding foes to 40.4 percent shooting. Opposing teams have also made just 26.8 percent of their three-point field goal attempts in the stretch (60-for-224).

When the Seahawks put up 81 points against Elon's stingy zone defense, it marked the second straight game and sixth game this season over the 80-point plateau for Siddle's squad.

The bouncy White is an emerging star in the CAA. The versatile guard has reached double figures in 13 of 16 games and led the team in scoring nine times. He remains the team's leading scorer (14.6 ppg) and rebounder (5.5 rpg) and was earlier named MVP of the Baha Mar Nassau Championship. White averaged 6.9 ppg last year in his first season with the club

The Seahawks are playing the seventh of nine games against seven North Carolina opponents. UNCW stands 5-1 against state opponents this season, losing only to then-No. 1 ranked North Carolina in Chapel Hill in the season opener on Nov. 7, 2022.

Following Saturday's matinee against the Aggies, the Seahawks return to the coast to entertain the Cougars on Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2023, in a 7 p.m. tip.
