Seahawks Look To Start New Streak

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – With 12-game and 13-game winning streaks the last two seasons, the UNCW men's basketball team has a penchant for stringing together victories. Time to get started on a new one.

Coach Takayo Siddle's club, 14-4 overall and 4-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association, take on William & Mary's Tribe, 7-10 and 2-2, in a nationally-televised game on Saturday, Jan. 14, 2023, at Trask Coliseum. The 5 p.m. contest is slated to air on the CBS Sports Network, with John Fanta and Terrence Oglesby on the call.

The first matchup in this year's regular season series with the Tribe may also be heard on 95.9 FM The Breeze, with play-by-play voice Mike Vaccaro and color analyst Marty Feurer providing the action, beginning at 4:45 p.m. Video is available on FloSports.com.

UNCW tries to bounce back from a tough 71-69 setback to No. 22 Charleston late Wednesday that snapped the Seahawks' school-record 13-game skein. Saturday marks the 80th meeting between the two teams - the second longest series on record for UNCW.

In Wednesday's game, contested before the 60th sellout in Trask Coliseum history, Charleston graduate guard Jaylon Scott swatted away a game-winning attempt by UNCW senior guard Shykeim Phillips with one second remaining to give the once-beaten Cougars the victory. Graduate guard Dalton Bolon paced four Cougars in double figures with 16 points. Sophomore guards Trazarien White and Jamarii Thomas led the Seahawks with 16 points each.

Charleston raced out to a 42-31 lead at intermission and overcame 23.3 percent shooting in the second half to remain the lone unbeaten team in the conference.

The Seahawks have just 13 games remaining in the regular season - seven at home and six on the road. UNCW has home games left with William & Mary, Elon, Monmouth, N.C. A&T, Northeastern, Stony Brook and Towson. Road trips will take Takayo Siddle's club to Hofstra, Stony Brook, William & Mary, Charleston, Drexel and Delaware.

The Seahawks feature four players averaging in double figures in CAA outings: White (15.8), Maleeck Harden-Hayes (13.8), Amari Kelly (11.0), Thomas (11.0).

The Seahawks rank in the top-3 in the CAA statistics in seven different categories: Scoring Defense, 2nd; Scoring Margin, 2nd; Field Goal Percentage, 2nd; Field Goal Percentage Defense, 3rd; 3-Point Field Goal Percentage Defense, 1st; Rebounding Defense, 2nd; Turnover Margin, 1st.

Dane Fischer's Tribe has alternated wins and losses over the last six games. W&M controlled the paint and shot a blistering 58.7 percent from the floor to cruise past CAA newcomer Hampton, 81-65, on Wednesday night at Kaplan Arena. W&M used a balanced attack that notched four in double digits, including junior guard Nate Collier with 15 points and 12 rebounds. The Tribe finished strong, scoring nine of the final 10 points to hand their local rivals the loss.

The Seahawks and Tribe have a long history on the hardwood. UNCW leads the all-time series by a 47-32 margin and the two teams have split the last 10 meetings in the series.

In last year's game in the Port City, senior guard Jaylen Sims of UNCW poured in a game-high 26 points and junior guard Shykeim Phillips provided a spark in overtime to propel UNCW to an 80-73, decision on Valentine's Day. Sims turned in his second straight 20-point performance and connected on 8-of-13 field goals. Phillips wound up with a career-high 24 points, with 11 points in overtime and a team-best seven rebounds. UNCW completed the series sweep after surrendering a nine-point lead with 2:46 left in regulation and surviving a three-point field goal attempt by Brandon Carroll in front of the Tribe bench with 3.3 seconds remaining.

The Seahawks stand 25-13 against the Tribe on the Carolina coast. W&M has dropped three straight in Wilmington. The Tribe's last win in the Port City came on Jan. 27, 2018, via a 96-78 rout at Trask Coliseum.

The Seahawks and Tribe have only had one common opponent this season - CAA member Hampton - and the final scores were nearly identical. The Seahawks tripped up the Pirates, 82-65, on New Year's Eve at Trask Coliseum. The Tribe took down the Pirates, 82-65, on Wednesday (Jan. 11) in Williamsburg.

The Seahawks and Tribe wrap up the home-and-home series on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2023, at Kaplan Arena. Tip is 2 p.m.

Following Saturday, the Seahawks turn right around and close out a three-game homestand with a 7 p.m. rematch against visiting Elon on Monday.
