Seahawk Enjoy Big First Day At CAA Meet

DEDHAM, Massachusetts – A strong showing in the field events got the UNCW track and field teams off to a strong start at the 2022 Colonial Athletic Association Track & Field Championships on Friday at the Solomon Track.

UNCW's men totaled 48 points and trail only host Northeastern (65) after the first day of the two-day meet. William & Mary (27) stands third and Hofstra sits in fourth place (8). The Seahawk women are in seventh place with 10 points.

Senior Owen Pelletier returned the Men's Long Jump title back to Wilmington after leaping 22-11.75. Junior Josh Parks also picked up a bronze in the event with a jump of 22.7.25 as the Seahawks racked up 22 points. UNCW has won the event in five of the last nine years.

In the Men's Javelin, Seahawk freshman Ryan DeBarber claimed silver with a throw of 195-03. He set a freshman record with the throw, breaking Dan Caffrey's old mark of 189-3 set in 2014. DeBarber's throw also represents the third best on the all-time list behind Caffrey (218-3) and Bruce Smith (204-4).

DeBarber, son of former Seahawk throwing standout Patrick DeBarber, qualified for the USATF U20 Championships scheduled for June 23-25 in Eugene, Ore., where he'll have an opportunity to earn a spot with Team USA.

Sophomore Kenny King paced a Seahawk flourish in the Men's Hammer Throw. The Bowie, Md., thrower took bronze in the event with a toss of 135-04.

In the Men's 200 Meter prelims, the Seahawks qualified four runners for the finals. Cooper Wright (3rd/21.62), Dalton Zimmerman (4th/22.06), Nickolis Anderson (5th/21.15) and Keegan Wiggins (7th/22.84) will all compete in the finals on Saturday.

Defending champion Ryan Hunt is off to a strong start in the Decathlon. The Durham, N.C., junior has racked up 3,323 points through four events, winning the 100 Meters and finishing second in the Long Jump and Shot Put. He leads Paul Wisnaskas, Northeastern (3,320), Daniel Layton, William & Mary (3,227) and Cole Harris, William & Mary (3,031).

On the women's side, junior Courtney Lines captured first place in the Women's Long Jump with a mark of 19-04. The Leland, N.C., native edged out Delaware's Alicia Lehman for the gold. Lines joined Courtney Cefalo (2018) as the only Seahawks to win the event.

In addition, three sprinters – Courtney Lines, Janiyah Fields and Brynn Sheffield – qualified for Saturday's finals of the 100 Meters and rookie Nasiah Ferguson qualified for the finals of the 400 Meters.

Sophomore Carly Mixon stands ninth in the Heptathlon with 2,251 points after four events. She trails Dominique Biron, Northeastern (3,240), Kennedee Cox, Northeastern (2,926), Ani Boghossian-James, Towson (2,779), Destiney DeBlock, Delaware (2,694), Hollie Thurgood, Elon (2,546), Monay James, William & Mary (2,421), Claire Bailey, William & Mary (2,290) and Mayson Light, Delaware (2,272).
