Eight Seahawks Earn All-CAA Honors

WILMINGTON, N.C. – A league-leading four UNCW Seahawks were named first-team All-Colonial Athletic Association as Brooks Baldwin, Taber Mongero, Ethan Baucom and RJ Sales were honored by the league coaches on Tuesday.

UNCW totaled eight players on the all-conference teams, including Chris Thorburn on the second team, Sales and Cyle Phelan on the all-rookie team and Matt Suggs and Hunter Hodges were honorable mention honorees.

Baldwin, who was also the league's Player of the Year, enters the conference tournament as the league's leading hitter with a career-high .348 batting average and ranks among the conference leaders in x offensive categories.

Mongero, who is in his second season with the Seahawks, also fashioned career-highs this season in at bats (202), batting average (.307), runs (41), doubles (12), triples (2), home runs (6), slugging percentage (.475) and total bases (96). Defensively, Mongero has posted the highest fielding percentage by a shortstop in program history with a .968 mark in 221 total chances.

Baucom, a graduate transfer from UNC Pembroke, carries a .278 batting average into the tournament and ranks third in the conference with 11 home runs, doubles (16) and slugging percentage (.561) while also ranking in the top 10 in total bases and runs batted in. Baucom leads the Seahawks with 19 two-out RBI's.

Sales, a freshman righthander, rounds out the first-team contingent. As a rookie, Sales began the season as a member of the starting rotation but moved into the Friday role in the seventh week of the season. At the top of the rotation, Sales fashioned a 4-0 mark over the final eight weeks of the season, including wins in opener of the Charleston, Northeastern and James Madison series. Overall, the righthander led the staff with six wins and a 3.30 earned run average.

Thorburn, meanwhile, moved into the designated hitter role against Towson, hit .297 over 111 at bats with six doubles and a home run. The home run came against NC State as the Seahawks upended the Wolfpack with a 13-11 win that ignited a five-game winning streak late in the season.

Joining Sales on the all-rookie team was Phelan, who began the season with four relief appearances before joining the rotation. In 14 appearances, 10 being starts, Phelan went 2-2 with a 4.13 ERA while limiting opponents to a .187 batting average.

Suggs is tied for the league-lead with 13 home runs, a career-high, second in runs batted in with 48 and 10th in slugging percentage. Defensively, Suggs committed one passed ball and threw our 10 base stealers.

Hodges made a career-high 26 appearances and fashioned a 3-1 mark and eight saves. His eight saves rank second in the CAA. Opponents hit a meager .096 against him this season and he struck out 50 batters in 28.2 innings (15.7 per nine innings). Over the course of two seasons, Hodges as limited opponents to a .134 batting average.
