Men's Track and Field Joe Browning

Three Seahawks Land NCAA T&F Selections

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Three UNCW student-athletes have punched their tickets to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field East Preliminary Round at Indiana's Haugh Track & Field Complex on May 25-28, 2022, in Bloomington, Ind.

Donovan Lara, Courtney Lines and Josh Parks are scheduled to compete in the meet, with an opportunity to advance to the NCAA National Championships in Eugene, Ore., on June 8-11, 2022, at historic Hayward Field. The top-12 in each event at the preliminary round move on to TrackTown USA.

"This means everything for our team," said Jeff Klaves, UNCW's third-year head coach. "From day one, our goal was to be in this position at this stage of the season. I couldn't be more proud of these three individuals for earning the opportunity to be at the NCAA meet.

"It speaks to the small but, elite culture that we continue to invest in. This year, it was about someone breaking through to this meet. We're blessed to have these three leading the way."

Student-athletes who ranked among the top 48 in their respective event earned a berth to the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds. The top 12 times/marks and the 12 best relay teams at the East and West Preliminary Rounds sites then qualify for the NCAA Championships.

ncaa_track_logo_2022Lara, a freshman jumper from Seagrove, N.C., burst on the national stage in his first season after leaping 6-10.25 at the Gamecock Invitational on April 16, 2022. He is ranked 43rd in the nation entering the meet.

"At this time last year, Donovan wasn't even on our roster," said Klaves. "This speaks to his growth and development over the past year. He has a competiveness that has transcended to the team."

Lines qualified after the Leland, N.C., product soared 20-3.50 in the Long Jump at High Point's Bob Davidson meet. She is ranked 29th going into the competition.

"For Courtney to qualify, it's a testament that hard work pays off," added Klaves. "She has been through so much to be at this stage. I'm truly excited that her hard work has paid off. She knows we're not done yet."

Parks, the Co-Most Outstanding Performer in the recent Colonial Athletic Association Championships, will compete in the 110 and 400 Hurdles in Bloomington. The Kannapolis, N.C., hurdler clocked a 13.95 time at the Raleigh Relays on March 25, 2022, and went 51.55 at the same meet to qualify in both events.

Parks, who medaled in six events at the CAA meet, is ranked 25th in the 400 and 32nd in the 110 Hurdles nationally. He racked up 48 points at the CAA Championships.

Klaves said, "Last year's near-miss has fueled his mindset all year long. Josh unselfishly put the tem first at the CAA Championships and is now looking forward to this opportunity."
