UNCW Drops Series To Visiting Elon

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Elon tied the game in the seventh and scored twice in the eighth to rally past UNCW, 3-1, to earn a Colonial Athletic Association series win on Sunday at Brooks Field.

The Phoenix pushed their record to 5-10 in the CAA and 20-22 overall while the Seahawks fell to 9-6 in the league and 24-18 on the season.
Griffin Arnone and Cole Reynolds had to hits apiece for the Phoenix. Arnone broke a one-all deadlock with a two-run single in the eighth.

Ben Simon (3-0) earned his second win of the series with 2.2 innings of hitless relief.

John Newton and Bryan Arendt each had two hits for the Seahawks. Ethan Baucom slammed his 10th home run of the season for UNCW's lone run.

Bryce Cota was tagged with the loss to slip to 1-1.

How it happened: Cota retired the first batter in the eighth, but Connor Coolahan doubled inside the third base bag to start the rally. Cole Benton entered the game for Cota and hit the first batter he faced and then walked the next batter to load the bases. Arnone followed with a single into center field to score the eventual winning runs.

Inside the box score: UNCW was 0-7 with RISP … Both teams struggled to get the leadoff hitter on base with Elon doing so one and UNCW twice … UNCW's Zane Taylor didn't figure in the decision despite allowing just one run on three hits and a walk … Taylor struck out six in 6.2 innings.
