Seahawks Wrap Up Duke Invitational

DURHAM, North Carolina – Freshmen Ryan DeBarber, JT Allen and Donovan Lara each recorded personal bests to highlight UNCW's performances as the curtain closed on the Duke Invitational on Saturday at Morris Williams Stadium in Durham.
 
DeBarber threw the javelin 185-7 for 15th place in the Men's Javelin, Allen clocked a 56.93 for 14th place in the 400 Meters and Lara placed sixth in the High Jump by clearing 6-8.
 
"Our freshmen are really locked in," said Jeff Klaves, UNCW's third-year head coach. "Donovan is a bar of two away from making the national list, JT had a complete race with a great finish to run his all-time best and Ryan hit a personal best after a great technical on his second attempt."
 
On the women's side, senior Alexa Woltjen broke the 2:20 barrier for the first time in her career in the 800 Meters. Moreover, all four women who competed in the High Jump – Rebekah Smith, Gabby Ryan, Maddie Norr and Lauryn Taylor - cleared bars.
 
"We are putting ourselves in positions to hit marks that are big enough to win," added Klaves. "The exciting part is that it's coming together at the right time. We look forward to traveling to South Carolina next week. When you put this team together at a meet, something special is going to happen. This group of high achievers is relentless and wants to keep improving."
 
In other action, junior sprinter Josh Parks and senior thrower Tori Whimple registered a pair of fifth-place finishes. Parks, from Kannapolis, N.C., came in fifth place in the Men's 110 Meter Hurdles with a time of 14.14. Whimple, from Castleton, N.Y., took fifth in the Women's Triple Jump with a leap of 39.1
 
The Seahawks travel to Columbia, S.C., to compete in the USC Open next weekend before taking part in the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville on Apr. 22-23, 2021.The Colonial Athletic Association Championships will be staged in Boston on May 6-7, 2022.
