Seahawks Win Five Events At Bill Carson Invite

GREENVILLE, North Carolina –The UNCW track and field teams racked up five first-place finishes in the Bill Carson Invitational on Friday and Saturday at East Carolina's Minges Family Field at the Bate Foundation Track and Field Facility.

The Seahawks were joined by the host Pirates, The Citadel, Virginia Tech, Mount Olive and UNC Pembroke in the two-day meet.

"We're building momentum," said Jeff Klaves, UNCW's third-year head coach. "Success happens in practice well before the meet and this team is locked in to what it takes to be successful.

"We're excited about the PR's, season bests and new top-10 marks because it gives us that quick opportunity to celebrate the mini-victories of track and field. Our main focus is still on what's next as we keep pushing the mark to the CAA and NCAA meets."

Freshman Ryan DeBarber (Enfield, Conn.) started things off on Friday by winning the Men's Javelin with a throw of 174-4.

Another newcomer, Khairi Williams (Winston-Salem, N.C.), was one of four winners on Saturday, racing to first in the 110 Meter Hurdles in 14.60. He moved into 10th on the all-time chart, moving ahead of Kris Jones.

Freshman Janiyah Fields (Cary, N.C.) raised eyebrows in the Women's 200 Meters by beating the field with a time of 24.61. It was sixth-best all-time in the event.

Sophomore Mackenzie Townsend (Waxhaw, N.C.) collected the fifth gold medal on the day, winning the 400 Meters in 57.89.

Junior Josh Parks (Kannapolis, N.C.) also ran a 10.45 for third all-time in the Men's 100 Meters. He trails Cameron Shaw (10.35) and Justine Prevette (10.39) on the chart.

The Seahawks head down the home stretch with their outdoor schedule. They'll compete in the Duke Invitational next weekend (April 8-9, 2022) and have meets at South Carolina and Virginia on top before the CAA Championships in Boston on May 6-7, 2022.
