Men's Basketball Joe Browning

Siddle, Sims Headline CAA Hoops Honorees

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Second-year UNCW head coach Takayo Siddle has been tabbed the Colonial Athletic Association's Coach of the Year and senior guard Jaylen Sims garnered First-Team All-CAA honors on the eve of the 2022 CAA Men's Basketball Championship in Washington.

In addition, graduate guard Mike Okauru earned Second-Team All-CAA honors and junior guard Shykeim Phillips was named to the CAA's All-Defensive unit.

The Seahawks, 21-8 overall, enter this weekend's nine-team tournament as the No. 2 seed following a sterling 15-3 conference ledger during the regular season. UNCW shared the regular season championship with top-seeded Towson.

One year removed from navigating Covid-19 and his first season with a 7-10 record, Siddle steered the Seahawks to their ninth CAA regular season title after his squad was picked to end up ninth in the league's preseason poll.

The campaign included several outstanding accomplishments - a 12-game winning streak, an unbeaten record in January, a 12-2 mark at Trask Coliseum and a 9-5 scorecard in true road games. It was the program's eighth 20-win season and the first since the 2016-17 season.

Siddle is UNCW's seventh CAA Coach of the Year honoree, joining Jerry Wainwright (1996-97, 2000-01), Brad Brownell (2002-03, 2005-06) and Kevin Keatts (2014-15, 2015-16) on the list.

Sims, a 6-6, 210-pound guard from Charlotte, turned in a fine senior season, averaging 15.7 points and 5.6 rebounds to lead the team in both categories. He ranked second in the CAA in scoring and seventh in free throw percentage, connecting on 80 percent at the charity stripe. Sims reached double figures in scoring in 17 of 18 conference games and 25 overall. The versatile performer scored 20 points or more in eight contests.

Sims is the program's 21st First-Team selection and the first since all-time great Devontae Cacok collected the honor in 2018-19.

Okauru, a 6-4, 190-pound graduate guard who earned Third-Team All-CAA honors last year, moved up to the Second-Team after the team's resurgence in 2021-22. The Raleigh native averaged 12.8 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.8 assists and reached double figures in 19 games. He matched his career-high with 30 points at William & Mary in a nationally-televised game on Feb. 5, 2022, at Kaplan Arena in Williamsburg.

The scrappy Phillips returned at full-strength from an injury last season and it showed. The guard from Winterville, N.C., picked up All-Defensive Team honors after making 24 starts and collecting a team-high 55 steals this season. He grabbed three of more steals in nine games and had a combined nine steals in the last two games of the regular season at Drexel and Delaware.
