Men's Hoops Advances to NIT Second Round

NEW HAVEN, Connecticut – For the sixth time this season, the UNCW men's basketball team erased a double-digit deficit to advance past No. 3 seed Yale by a narrow 68-67 margin in the First Round of the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) late Tuesday night at the John J. Lee Ampitheater.

The Seahawks (27-6) will advance to the NIT Second Round to play the winner of Tuesday night's contest between No. 2 seed Dayton and Bradley. The Bulldogs conclude their successful season at 24-7.

Senior Christian May led the way with 16 points to anchor four UNCW players in double figures along with Madison Durr and Nolan Hodge, both with 13, and Patrick Wessler's 10.

Yale's Isaac Celiscar paced all scorers with 23. Casey Simmons finished with 16 and Nick Townsend added 11.

The Seahawks erased a 14-point second-half deficit after the Bulldogs took control from the jump with the game's first nine points.

Durr and Hodge engineered a 12-3 run that saw UNCW take a 58-54 lead with 5:34 before Yale rattled off eight straight points. A Wessler layup tied the game at 62-62 to set up a showdown in the final 3:10 of play.

May splashed a pair of three-pointers in the final 2:11, including the eventual game-winner three with 34 seconds left after the Bulldogs' Trevor Mullin put the hosts up 67-65 on a trifecta from the top of the key.

Both teams battled until the final seconds, including each squad missing a pair of free throws in the final seconds, and the Seahawks withstood a pair of late Yale charges to complete the comeback.

The win marked the 99th victory in the careers of Hodge and Noah Ross, tying former teammate Khamari McGriff on the all-time wins leaderboard.

The date, time and location of the Second Round will be determined following Wednesday night's First Round slate. The Second Round games will occur on Mar. 21 or 22.
