UNCW Takes Series From Buckeyes As Phelan Rolls

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Freshman Cyle Phelan allowed one run over 6.2 innings and Matt Suggs had three hits as UNCW topped Ohio State, 7-2, on Sunday at Brooks Field to win the non-conference series, three games to one.

UNCW improved to 12-7 while the Buckeyes slipped to 7-11.

Phelan (1-0), who was making his collegiate starting debut, allowed a run on three hits and a pair of walks by striking out six in his season-long outing. He held the Buckeyes off the scoreboard until the seventh inning.

Suggs knocked in two and scored twice in addition to his three hits. His double in the eighth inning broke open a two-run game. Trevor Marsh added a pair of extra base hits, including a RBI triple to open the scoring in the second inning. Dillon Lifrieri, who finished with two hits and drove in two runs, belted his team-leading fifth home run of the season in the fifth inning.

OSU starter Wyatt Loncar (1-2) took the loss despite a solid start. The righthander surrendered three runs on seven hits and struck out eight in six innings of work.

Trey Lipsey and Tyler Pettorini had two hits apiece to pace the OSU lineup and Brent Todys hit his first home run of the season in the top of the ninth.

How it happened: In the UNCW second, Suggs singled up the middle with two out. Marsh tripled into center field as his sinking line drive skipped past the diving center field, scoring Suggs for a 1-0 lead. In the second, Bryan Arendt drew a leadoff walk and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. Lifrieri followed with a double to left center to score Arendt to make it 2-0.
