CAA Honors Sims For Outstanding Week

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Senior guard Jaylen Sims of UNCW has been selected as the Colonial Athletic Association's Player of the Week after the Seahawks claimed a pair of victories that kept the club atop the league standings.
 
Sims, a 6-6, 190-pound guard from Charlotte, becomes the third Seahawk to be honored by the league this season.
 
Freshman Trazarien White was tabbed Rookie of the Week on Dec. 20, 2021, and junior guard Shykeim Phillips of UNCW was chosen Co-Player of the Week on Jan. 24, 2022.
 
The versatile Sims averaged 24.0 points and 6.7 rebounds as the Seahawks defeated William & Mary and James Madison in overtime sandwiched around a loss to Towson. He shot 43.5 percent from floor (20-of-46), 35.0 percent from long distance (7-of-20) and 89.3 percent (25-of-28) at free throw line.
 
"Jaylen has been our rock all season and is very deserving of this recognition," said Takayo Siddle, UNCW's second-year head coach. "He had a terrific week not only as a scorer, but defensively and as a leader as well. I'm very proud of the approach he's taken this year and his continued improvement in every phase of the game."
 
Sims poured in 26 points with six rebounds and four assists in UNCW's 80-73 overtime victory over Tribe last Monday and finished with 22 points and four rebounds in Thursday's 79-55 loss to Towson.
 
The CAA's third leading scorer capped the stellar week by racking up a double-double of 24 points and 10 rebounds in Saturday's 78-77 overtime thriller over James Madison before a sellout crowd at Trask Coliseum.
 
Sims has led team in scoring (15.9 ppg) and rebounding (5.6 rpg) throughout the season and has the Seahawks on the cusp of their ninth CAA regular season title.
 
UNCW concludes the regular campaign this week with a pair of games at Drexel (Thursday, Feb. 24) and Delaware (Saturday, Feb. 26).
