WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW women's basketball outscored Mount Olive 21-5 over the final four minutes to pull away from the Division II Trojans, 84-59, on Wednesday night at Trask Coliseum.
The Seahawks, 1-2, recorded their first victory under Interim Head Coach Tina Martin with five players scoring in double figures for the first time in eight seasons. The game was an exhibition for UMO.
Junior guard Mary McMillan led the UNCW charge with a career-high 21 points. The Apopka, Fla., native was joined in double-digits by graduate guard Carrie Gross (16), sophomore guard Jayde Gamble (12), graduate forward Micah Hoggatt (11) and junior guard Evan Miller (10).
The Trojans were paced by forwards Laila Harris and Reagan Hune, who combined for 31 points on 12-of-23 shooting.
Trailing 34-33 at halftime, the Seahawks outscored the Trojans 51-25 in a dominant second half that saw UNCW shoot 57.7 percent (15-of-26) from the floor.
The teams traded the lead three times in the first five minutes after the break before Gross drained a jumper in the paint to start an 11-3 run over the final 4:21 to carry a 53-45 Seahawk advantage into the final quarter.
UMO opened the fourth with five straight points but UNCW responded with 10 unanswered markers, including six by Gamble, to put the Seahawks ahead 63-50 with 5:30 to go in the game.
A Harris fastbreak jumper briefly trimmed the deficit to single digits. UNCW then erupted with 16 consecutive points highlighted by 10 straight free throws by McMillan, Miller and Hoggatt to swell the lead to 81-56 and earn its first win.
The Seahawks had to rally from a 25-15 deficit late in the first quarter. UNCW closed the opening period with five unanswered points and then twiddled the margin down in the second period to tie it 31-all on a Gamble layup with 1:34 to go.
UMO's Kaia Simpson buried a three-pointer with 23 ticks remaining and was countered by a Miller jumper at the buzzer to give the visiting Trojans a one-point lead at the intermission.
The Seahawks next play Wofford at home next Tuesday at 7 p.m.
