Seahawks Drop Narrow Decision, 67-66

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Wofford scored the final six points of the game to escape Trask Coliseum with a narrow 67-66 decision over UNCW in women's basketball action on Tuesday night.

The Terriers, 3-2, earned their third straight win and return home next Monday for a contest vs. Southern Wesleyan. The Seahawks, 1-3, next hit the road for a Sunday afternoon matchup at Radford following Thanksgiving.

Junior guard Mary McMillan led all scorers with a career-high 25 points, including a personal best five three-pointers. The 5-6 guard, who reset her career scoring benchmark for the second straight game, was joined in double figures by graduate guard Carrie Gross's career effort of 20 points.

Wofford's Rachael Rose paced the visiting Terriers with 22 points. Terrier starters Helen Matthews (14) and Jackie Carman (13) also posted double-digit scoring efforts.

The back-and-forth game that featured 15 lead changes and four ties proved true with 29 seconds remaining in the fourth period. UNCW, holding a 66-65 lead, fouled Rose who then made the first and missed the second charity attempt.

Terriers guard Indiya Clarke secured the rebound off the rim and converted the putback to put Wofford ahead, 67-66, with 27 ticks left.

After a timeout advanced the ball to half court, the Seahawks, who shot 42.1 percent (24-of-57), stared down the running clock until Britany Range fired a corner three that was off the mark. Matthews corralled the rebound with three seconds remaining to secure the Terriers' win.

It was a game of runs with neither team leading more than seven points throughout the battle. The second quarter featured 11-0 spurts by both teams and concluded with UNCW ahead 31-30 at the intermission.

The Seahawks did not surrender the halftime lead until 1:48 left in the third period when Wofford, who converted at a 39.1 percent (26-of-64) clip, used a seven-point spurt to go up 44-42 on a Rose layup. UNCW responded with a 7-0 run of its own and entered the final period ahead 49-44.

The fourth quarter included seven lead changes with a Range layup giving the Seahawks a 66-61 advantage with 2:26 to go. The Terriers then closed the game on a 6-0 run to edge UNCW by one point.
