Women's Basketball Preview: East Carolina

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW women's basketball continues the 2023-23 season with its road opener at East Carolina on Sunday afternoon at the Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.

The game will tip-off at 2 p.m. and can be live-streamed on ESPN+ with Chris Edwards and Debbie Taylor on the call. Live Stats will be available at UNCWStats.com.

The Seahawks enter with a 0-1 record following a season-opening setback vs. Division II opponent Lenoir-Rhyne. The Pirates split a pair of games to stand 1-1 on the young season.

UNCW looks to rebound following a 57-46 defeat at home against the Bears on Monday. Lenoir-Rhyne built a double-digit lead in the second quarter and never looked back to pull past the Seahawks.

Graduate guard Carrie Gross poured in career-highs of 19 points and nine rebounds in the Bears loss. Forward Micah Hoggatt (11) and guard Evan Miller (10) became the first pair of Seahawks to record double-digit rebounds since Hoggatt and Allie Best last season vs. Elon.

The Seahawks hit the road this weekend for the first of 15 away games on the 2022-23 docket.

ECU, who will play the third of five straight home games to open its campaign, started its year on a high note with a 71-35 victory vs. South Carolina State before dropping a 57-46 result against Wake Forest.

Senior guard Danae McNeal (13.5 ppg) and freshman forward Amiya Joyner (11.0 ppg) have led the Pirates with two double-digit scoring efforts to begin this season. The rookie Joyner also paces ECU on the glass with a team-high 15 rebounds through the opening week.

It marks the 59th time the two in-state rivals will meet up since the series began in 1974. The two schools were Colonial Athletic Association rivals from 1985 to 2001 and twice met in the CAA Tournament.

The Seahawks and Pirates last met in 2021 with ECU earning a 79-50 win in Wilmington.

UNCW returns home on Nov. 16 for a 7 p.m. contest vs. Mount Olive.
