Seahawks Open Strong In ITA Doubles Play

CARY, North Carolina – Two UNCW doubles teams advanced to the Round of 16 as the Seahawks concluded the second day of action at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Men's Tennis Carolina Regional on Saturday at the Cary Tennis Park.
 
The Seahawks went 2-1 in singles and 5-2 in doubles. It was the opening day of doubles for the 23 teams competing in the regional event.  
 
Drew Broadstreet and Trey Mallory of UNCW advanced to the Round of 16 with victories over opponents from Wake Forest and Elon. The tandem upset No. 5-seeded Melios Efstathiou and Bozo Barun of Wake, 6-2, 6-3, and cruised past Elon's Veljko Krstic and Oskar Antinheimo, 7-5, 6-0.
 
UNCW's Davide Innocenti and Alex DeGabriele also claimed their first two matches in the draw, beating Furman's Emil Westling and Alex Han, 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (9), before surprising seventh-seeded Damien Salvestre and Brade Shick of N.C. State, 6-3, 6-3.
 
In addition to the Seahawks, other schools competing include Campbell, Charleston, Charlotte, Clemson, Coastal Carolina, Davidson, Duke, Elon, Furman, Gardner-Webb, North Carolina, North Carolina A&T, UNC Asheville, North Carolina Central, N.C. State, Presbyterian, South Carolina, South Carolina State, The Citadel, Queens University, Wake Forest, and Wofford.
 
Play concludes on Sunday with singles and doubles at the Cary Tennis Park. The singles Round of 16 begins on Sunday at 9 a.m., followed by the singles quarterfinals at noon. The Round of 16 in doubles starts at 3 p.m.
