Seahawks Eye Ninth Straight Win In Boston

BOSTON, Massachusetts – UNCW's surging men's basketball team tries to extend the nation's sixth longest winning streak on Monday night when the Seahawks take on Northeastern in a 7 p.m. tip at historic Matthews Arena.

The Seahawks, 11-5 overall and a perfect 5-0 in the Colonial Athletic Association, are shooting for their ninth consecutive victory. UNCW has won its first three outings in a challenging four-game road trip – knocking off Charleston, James Madison and Towson – heading into the matchup in Beantown.

Northeastern, projected to finish second in the CAA's preseason poll, carries a 6-12 overall and 0-7 conference record into the matchup. The Huskies suffered a 72-50 lopsided loss to Hofstra last Saturday in Boston.

Monday's contest is a rescheduled game from Jan. 5, 2022, meaning the two clubs have back-to-back dates since the Huskie are slated to visit coastal North Carolina on Thursday for a 7 p.m. matchup.

UNCW is tied with Gonzaga, Wagner and South Dakota State for the sixth longest winning streak in the NCAA Division I ranks. Auburn and Davidson are tied for first with 15 straight wins, followed by Boise State (12) and Princeton (10).

In their last test, the resilient Seahawks rallied in the second half to force overtime to remain the lone unbeaten team in the CAA with a hard-earned 81-77 victory over Towson in a Saturday matinee at SECU Arena near Baltimore.

The Seahawks have employed a balanced scoring attack of late, placing five men in double figures in the win over the Tigers. Sophomore guard Shykeim led the way with 18 points followed by senior guard Jaylen Sims with 15, Jaylen Fornes with 13, Jahmari Harvey with 12 and James Baker, Jr., with 10.

The Seahawks trailed by 13 points midway through the second half, but rallied for their second overtime victory in as many tries this season.

Sims wound up sinking all six of his free throws in the final 16 seconds to ice the victory for the Seahawks. Sims went 11-of-12 at the foul line to go along with his two field goals on the day. In five appearances at SECU Arena, Sims has tossed in 35-of-40 at the free throw line, including six in overtime on Saturday to seal the extra session victory.

The Huskies, 4-4 at home this year, have had an uncharacteristic season in the CAA's northern outpost. NU has dropped its last eight games since a victory at UMass on Dec. 7, 2020, 2021. Veteran head coach Bill Coen's club has struggled offensively, shooting 43.5 percent and averaging just 64.9 ppg.
