Men's Track and Field Joe Browning

Seahawks Garner 12 Medals At CAA Meet

HARRISONBURG, Virginia – Senior Dylan Wood and sophomore Ryan Hunt each won gold medals and sophomore Josh Parks collected two silvers as the UNCW men's and women's track and field teams wrapped up the 2021 Colonial Athletic Association Track & Field Championships on Saturday at James Madison's Sentara Park.

Stiff breezes returned to the oval following a challenging opening day on Friday, but the four men's teams and nine women's teams fought through the conditions after last year's meet was postponed due to Covid-19.

hunt_decathlonNortheastern successfully defending its men's title and captured its sixth consecutive championship by a wide margin, outscoring second place William & Mary, 291-191. UNCW came in third with 111 points and Hofstra wound up fourth with 19 points.

Elon, meanwhile, claimed the women's title with 191.5 points after scoring significant points in the distance events. Towson came in second place with 174 points.

Hunt, from Durham, N.C., easily won the Decathlon to give the Seahawks back-to-back champions in the event. Hunt finished with 5,435 points to join Nathan Rodgers (2019), Caleb Mathis (2014), Brian Blumenstein (2009, 2008), Matt Miller (2007) and John Gross (2005) as UNCW Decathlon champions. Hunt won eight of the 10 events in the Decathlon to win by 349 points over Northeastern's Lionel Beane.

Wood, competing in his final CAA meet, mined gold in the Men's Triple Jump and silver in the Men's High Jump. With a leap of 42-00.50, Wood became the 11th Seahawk to win the Triple Jumpe through the years.

Overall, 10 different Seahawks medaled in the first CAA track and field championship in 727 days.

Head Coach Jeff Klaves: "Today showed the heart and willpower of this team. We're so proud of each of the student-athletes. The best part of today was being present across the board.  We had a large group of athletes that made finals and outperformed their qualification marks.

Our seniors passed the torch and our underclassman are leaving this meet hungry for next year already.  The buy-in is present and I look forward to leading this dedicated group of men and women moving forward. In 2019, we scored 19 points on the women's side. Today we scored 52.5 points.  That was because all these women fought hard together and competed all weekend.

I'd like to single out the work ethic of our two individual champions. The commitment of Ryan Hunt and Dylan Wood to this program makes those winning moments so rewarding.  Ryan is the cornerstone of our multis program and Dylan is a senior captain that came back for his fifth year for this moment. "
