Whimple Sets TJ Record At USC Open

COLUMBIA, South Carolina – Junior Victoria Whimple became the first female student-athlete from UNCW to soar 40 feet in the Women's Triple Jump to highlight the program's finishes Saturday in the USC Open at the University of South Carolina's Sheila and Morris Cregger Track.
 
"We showed up today and proved that we belonged at a high caliber meet like the USC Open," said Jeff Klaves, UNCW's head coach. "Tori led the way with a huge breakthrough and put together a series of jumps over 12 meters. That was just one of the many we had. Overall, we had 19 personal records or season bests in the sprints, jumps and distance events.
 
"I'm proud of this team for continuing to trust the process and building week to week. The CAA Championships are less than two weeks away, so we're trying to control the controlables and be ready when that time comes."
 
In addition to Whimple's jump of 40-7.50, newcomer Jayda Hunter broke the freshman record and reached the finals of the Women's Triple Jump with a leap of 39-2.25, good for fifth all-time in the program. Senior Julia Ledgett also captured first place in the Women's 3,000 Meter Steeplechase with a time of 11:53.28.
 
The Seahawks next head to Harrisonburg, Va., to compete in the Colonial Athletic Association Track & Field Championships from Apr. 30-May 1.
