Seahawk Staff Spotlight: Randy Hood

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCWSports.com will look at the members of the UNCW Department of Athletics staff with a weekly feature called "Seahawk Staff Spotlight." Each Tuesday, the website will profile a different member of the staff.

With the start of baseball season just a couple of weeks away, this week's featured staff member is UNCW Head Baseball Coach Randy Hood. The Goldsboro, N.C., native embarks on his 20th season with the program, including his second year as the Seahawks' skipper.

What do you remember about your first day working at UNCW?
Sharing the second-floor office in the Brooks Field press box with four other coaches (there were some tight quarters). Also, staying the first four months with assistant basketball coach Mike Winiecki at his apartment and sleeping on a floor futon.

What is one of your favorite memories of working at UNCW?
There are too many to just list one. We have had many great days and big wins. Winning our first CAA Championship here on campus in front of our home crowd in 2004 was really special.

What does working at UNCW mean to you?
It's something I have never taken for granted. I love the area, the people I come into contact with every day and especially our great student-athletes. We're never given anything and everything we accomplish is earned! It makes every accomplishment that much more special.

If you were an athlete, what jersey number would you want to wear and why?
#17 – For no other reason than I like to finish (1) and 7 is my lucky number. Put them together and you get 17.

Did you play sports in college? If so, what sport and where did you play?
I played four years of baseball at Campbell University from 1987-90. We won two Big South Conference Championships and made the program's first-ever NCAA Regional appearance in 1990. I was also on the Big South's All-Decade Team for the 1980s.
