CAA Preseason Pollsters Honor Okauru, Sims

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW men's basketball team has been tapped to finish ninth and guards Mike Okauru and Jaylen Sims collected preseason Honorable Mention honors in a poll conducted by the Colonial Athletic Association's head coaches, media and communications professionals ahead of the 2021-22 season.
 
The preseason listing and individual accolades were announced early Thursday in conjunction with the CAA's annual Men's Basketball Media Day, which was conducted virtually.
 
Six different teams garnered a first place vote in the annual poll. UNCW was selected to finish ninth behind Delaware, Northeastern, Drexel, James Madison, Hofstra, Elon, Charleston and Towson. William & Mary trailed the Seahawks in the listing.

It marked the third time (2014-15, 2019-20) that the Seahawks have been picked to finish ninth. UNCW was predicted to wind up eighth in 2020-21.

Okauru, a Third-Team All-CAA selection one year ago from Raleigh, N.C, averaged 14.2 ppg and 5.3 rpg in the Covid-shortened 2020-21 season.
 
Sims, from Charlotte, N.C., is the team's top returning scorer at 17.8 ppg. He appeared in 12 games last season, making nine starts, before sitting out the final five games due to an injury.
 
The Seahawks went 7-10 overall and 1-6 in the CAA in Takayo Siddle's first season with the club. A total of 11 games were cancelled due to Covid-19.
