Midnite Madness Returns With Flair

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Basketball is back and so is Midnite Madness, the annual student-centric celebration to herald the start of the new season.

Several hundred students and fans gathered late Friday night to signal the start of the 2021-22 campaign featuring a variety of activities. It marked the first Midnite Madness bonanza since Oct. 25, 2019, thanks to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Friday's rapid fire festivities began with the annual Trask Trek by students at 7:45 p.m. The doors to Trask Coliseum then opened at 8:30 p.m. and the celebration ensued at 9 p.m.

The time-honored event featured games for UNCW students, performances by the UNCW Dance Team, UNCW Cheerleaders and UNCW Pep Band, along with introductions of the new-look men's and women's teams.

Marist transfer guard Allie Best was impressive in the three-point shooting contest. The Glen Gardner, N.J., product defeated teammates Britany Range and Sierra DaCosta in the preliminary round and then topped Alec Oglesby of the men's team for the championship.

The slam dunk contest came down to a pair of newcomers on the men's side. High-flying freshman guard Jamarri Thomas bested transfer forward Khadim Samb for the title, displaying remarkable hops for a 6-1 backcourt performer.

In the Seahawk Shooting Stars competition, student Ethan Rothrock teamed up with sophomore guard Jamahri Harvey and redshirt senior Dazia Powell to defeat three other teams.

Head Coach Karen Barefoot's women's squad will play a home exhibition game on Friday, Oct. 29, against Wingate at 6 p.m. before opening the regular season on Wednesday, Nov. 10, vs. Mount Olive at Trask Coliseum.

Second-year Head Coach Takayo Siddle and his men entertain Francis Marion in an exhibition game on Thursday, Nov. 4, before starting the regular season on Nov. 9 at Illinois State.
