Deatherage Pitches UNCW Past Bryant

Seahawks finish opening weekend with 3-1 record


WILMINGTON, N.C. – Red-shirt senior Blake Deatherage struck out a career-high five batters over a career-long six innings as UNCW knocked off Bryant,4-2, in the second of two games for the Seahawks on Sunday t Brooks Field.

The Seahawks, who fell to Dayton, 9-2, earlier in the day, closed out the opening weekend with a 3-1 mark while Bryant fell to 0-4 to open the season.

Deatherage (1-0) was perfect through four innings until BU's Gaby Cruz homered to lead off the fifth inning. Sophomore Adam Smith retired the final two batters with the tying run on base for his first career save.

Bryant freshman Mason Palmieri (0-1) took the loss. The righthander was roughed up for three runs in the first inning before setting down and lasting six innings in his first career start.

Ron Evans and Noah Bridges, who stole two bases, had two hits apiece for the Seahawks. Evans slammed a two-run homer, his second of the season, in the first inning for a 3-0 Seahawk lead. Brooks Baldwin drove in the final run of the game in the UNCW eighth and tied a program record with four stolen bases.

Jake Gustin singled home a run in the ninth for the Bulldogs and Shane Kelly doubled in the fifth.

In the first game of the day, Dayton plated seven runs in the sixth on its way to a 9-2 win over the Seahawks.

Up next: The Seahawks host Coastal Carolina on Feb. 18 at 4 p.m.

How it happened: The Seahawks got to Palmieri in the top of the first for three runs. Bridges led off with a single to center, stole second and moved to third on the wild pitch. Baldwin walked while Bridges scored on another wild pitch. With one out, Evans homered to left to score Baldwin and make it 3-0.

Inside the box score: UNCW allowed just one leadoff hitter to reach safely … Bryant was 0-9 with two outs … Baldwin had UNCW's only two-out RBI …UNCW stole six bases … Pitchers combined to retire the side in order a combined 12 times.
