Evans Homers Again In UNCW Loss

Freshman slugger belted his third homer of the season on Wednesday


CONWAY, S.C.Noah Bridges had two hits and Ron Evans homered, but UNCW was unable to overcome three errors in a 4-3 loss at Coastal Carolina on Wednesday.

The Chanticleers improved to 2-1 on the young season while the Seahawks slipped to 3-2.

Evans, the reigning Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week, connected on a solo homer to left in the second inning. It was his third homer of the season.

Brian Port led the CCU offense with a pair of hits and drove in a run.

Alaska Abney (1-0) earned the win in relief for the Chants. Abney hurled 3.2 innings of hitless, shutout relief.

Nick Bruno (0-1) was tagged with the loss despite not allowing an earned run in his inning of work.

Up next: The Seahawks host Bowling Green, Butler and Marshall this weekend in the Hughes Bros. Challenge at Brooks Field. Marshall and Butler open the weekend's schedule at noon followed by the Seahawks and Bowling Green at 4 p.m.

How it happened: Coastal was able to take advantage of three UNCW errors to take a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth. The tying and go-ahead runs scored on a sac fly that as dropped in left. The runner reached second on the play and was headed to third. A throw to third was dropped during the rundown and Hyde scored when home plate was left uncovered.

Inside the box score: Both teams had one two-out hit (Cole Weiss) … Weiss had the lone two-out RBI on the night with a fifth-inning double … UNCW landed its leadoff hitter on base four times … Brooks Baldwin saw his hitting streak halted at 10 games … Seahawk pitchers walked just two and struck out 13 on the night … UNCW starter Brody Lawson (4.0 IP/2 H/1 R/1 BB/6 K) made his first appearance since Apr. 10, 2019.
