Serbian Team Edges Seahawks In Rome

ROME, ITALY – K.K. Kalubara of Belgrade, Serbia, rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit to slip past UNCW, 91-90, in the 2019 Foreign Tour finale for the Seahawks Monday night outside the eternal city.

The Seahawks split a pair of games during their visit abroad, defeating the Venetian Tigers, 85-47, last Thursday near Vicenza and falling to the Serbian club.

Florida transfer Mike Okauru led seven players in double figures for the Seahawks with 14 points. Junior guard Jay Estime', sophomore forward Marten Linssen and junior guard Brian Tolefree chipped in 12 points apiece.

K.K. Kalubara, which plays in Serbia's first division, scored the first bucket of the contest, but fell behind quickly and still trailed late in the contest before rallying in the final minute.

After transfer guard Brian Tolefree's triple lifted the Seahawks to a 90-89 edge with under a minute to play, K.K. Kalubara connected on the game-winner with 20 seconds on the clock. The Seahawks had a couple opportunities to pull the game out, but fell short as time expired.

The Seahawks jumped out to a 22-16 advantage at the end of the first half and extended the margin to 47-37 at intermission. The Serbian club began its comeback with a strong third period, outscoring the Seahawks, 27-21, and completed the surge with some late-game drama down the stretch.

"We got off to a pretty decent start and played hard the whole game," said C.B. McGrath, UNCW's third-year head coach. "It came down to making shots and they made their shots in the second half. We didn't get the stops that we needed to and they made some guarded shots while we missed some wide open looks."

Two Seahawks – sophomore guard Jaylen Sims and junior guard Ty Gadsden – did not suit up for the two games due to injuries.
