GREENVILLE, South Carolina – Senior Kayla Thompson fashioned a one-under-par 71 to pace UNCW during the opening round of the Furman Lady Paladin Invitational at the Furman University Golf Course on Friday afternoon.
 
The Seahawks, who carded a 298 team score to open the tournament, are tied with Kennesaw State and ETSU for fifth place. Daytona State surged to the early lead after finishing the first round at four-under-par.
 
Thompson, who posted her second sub-par round of the season, posted five birdies in the first nine holes en route to holding a share of sixth place.
 
Sophomore Thao My Nguyen is tied for 12th place after posting an even-par round to start the tournament while junior Ellinoora Moisio is part of a 12-way tie for 36th place following a four-over-par showing.
 
Freshman Caroline Cahill holds a share of 62nd place while fellow freshman Rachael Mast is tied for 81st place. Senior Alaina Yeatts, competing as an individual, will begin the second round in 89th place.
 
"I am pleased with how we played today," said UNCW Coach Cindy Ho. "The Furman course is demanding and we did a great job on the first nine holes, managing the course at two-over-par. Kayla got off to a fast start with five birdies and had an excellent round to open the tournament. Thao My and Ellinoora were two-under-par and even par through the turn, respectively. Overall, we are in a solid position with two rounds remaining."
