Seahawks Open Elon Invitational On Strong Note

ELON, North Carolina – The UNCW women's tennis team went a combined 8-2 on the opening day of the Elon Women's Tennis Invitational Friday at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
 
The Seahawks, making their 2017-18 debut, posted a 5-2 record in singles and a perfect 3-0 mark in doubles on the first of three days in the tournament.
 
Senior Madara Straume and junior Sabrina Barisano gave the Seahawks a pair of players in quarterfinals of the top singles draw. Straume outlasted Coastal Carolina's Rylie Cost, 6-0, 2-6, 6-4, and Barisano carved out a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 verdict over UNC Greensboro's Alice Taylor.
 
Action continues Saturday with a full slate of play for the eight teams competing in the event on the Elon campus.
