Seahawks Add CFCC's Brown To Recruiting Class

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Speedy point guard Jacque Brown of Cape Fear Community College is the latest addition to C.B. McGrath's first men's basketball recruiting class at UNCW.

The 5-8 165-pound Brown, from Beaufort, N.C., enjoyed an outstanding career at East Carteret High School before playing one season at Mount Olive College. He then averaged 18.2 points and 5.8 assists last season at CFCC for Coach Ryan Mantlo.

"We're very excited to add Jacque to our program," said McGrath. "I saw him play in high school and always loved his competitiveness and energy. He had a great season last year for Coach Mantlo and we're looking for him to positively impact our team right away."

Brown, who will have two years of eligibility remaining, led the Sea Devils to a 24-8 record after shooting 53.5 percent from the field and 48.3 percent behind the arc. He averaged 21.8 points over the team's final 13 games and scored more than 20 points in seven straight outings. Brown will become the first CFCC player to complete his career at UNCW.

At Mount Olive in 2015-16, Brown appeared in 25 games for the Trojans and made three starts. He ranked seventh in scoring at 5.8 points per game and third in assists with 2.5 helpers each contest. He scored a career-high 17 points vs. Florida Southern in a 94-84 victory on Dec. 19, 2015.

The durable Brown started four consecutive years at East Carteret and missed just one game. A three-time Carteret Country News-Times Player-of-the-Year honoree, he averaged 23.6 points, 4.3 rebounds, 8.4 assists and 3.5 steals in powering East Carteret to its first state championship in 2015. He led East Carteret to a 99-20 record in four seasons and a 59-3 mark in his final two years with the Mariners.

Brown was selected to the 2015 All-State team by The Associated Press and tabbed to play in Carolinas All-Star Basketball Classic and East-West All-Star Game. He was named MVP of the East-West All-Star Game after scoring 25 points in 20 minutes, including 5-of-7 behind the arc.

Brown closed out his career at East Carteret as school's all-time leader in points, assists and steals with more than 2,000 points, 700 assists and 200 steals.
