Men's Hoops Falls in CAA Quarterfinals

WASHINGTON, D.C. – No. 9 seed Campbell went on a 16-0 run midway through the second half to move past No. 1 seed UNCW 85-70 in the 2026 Coastal Athletic Association Men's Basketball Quarterfinals on Sunday afternoon at CareFirst Arena.

The Fighting Camels (16-17) advance to Monday's semifinal matchup against either Monmouth or Drexel. The Seahawks (26-6), who claimed the outright league regular season title, will continue their season after earning an automatic bid to the NIT.

All-CAA First Teamer Patrick Wessler and Sixth Man of the Year Madison Durr contributed 21 points each, a season-high for Durr. Wessler added a game-high 13 rebounds for his 16th double-double.

All-CAA guard DJ Smith paced Campbell with 20 points and was joined in double figures by Jeremiah Johnson (17), Dovydas Butka (13) and Chris Fields Jr. (11).

The Camels began their game-changing run with a pair of Johnson free throws with 13:23 left in the game after UNCW held a one-possession lead, 41-40, on a Wessler layup at the 14:58 mark.

Campbell maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way and led by as many as 19 points in the second half. The Seahawks cut the deficit to 12 twice and 11 once in the final 4:22, but the Camels answered each time.

UNCW raced out to a 21-10 lead over the first nine minutes of play, converting seven of its first 10 shots at the first media timeout, before the Camels played their way back into it with a 12-2 run and nearly entered halftime tied if not for Wessler's buzzer beater at the horn to send the Seahawks into the locker room ahead 33-31.
