Seahawks Add Transfer To 2017-18 Men's Hoops Roster

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – New UNCW men's basketball head coach C.B. McGrath continued to fill out his roster for the 2017-18 campaign on Wednesday with the addition of Mount St. Mary's transfer student Mawdo Sallah.

The signing of the 6-9, 235-pound Sallah gives McGrath a pair of newcomers to go along with several returnees for the two-time defending Colonial Athletic Association champions next fall. McGrath earlier inked versatile wing Jay Estimé, a 6-5, 190-pound guard/forward from Berkmar High School in Lilburn, Ga.

Sallah, 23, has spent the last three years at Mount St. Mary's in Emmitsburg, Md., and will graduate in August. He plans to enroll in UNCW's Cameron School of Business to study International Business, with two years of playing eligibility remaining.

"Mawdo is going to be a great addition because he has college experience and great character," said McGrath. "He has an intense desire to work hard and be part of the team.

"The coaches at Mount St. Mary's were very complimentary about him. Mawdo wants to expand his game and we're looking forward to working with him. He's college basketball ready and he's a nice piece to add to our roster moving forward."

A native of Latri Kunda, Gambia, Sallah started 35 of 36 games this past season for the Mountaineers of the Northeast Conference, including the Mount's NCAA Tournament First Four victory over New Orleans and NCAA Tournament First-Round defeat to Villanova. He averaged 6.1 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game in 2016-17 and scored a career-high 14 points with nine rebounds at Wagner on Feb. 16, 2017.

Sallah appeared in 15 games as a freshman in 2014-15 and made three starts for the Mount. In a loss at Notre Dame, Sallah had four points, five rebounds and four blocks against the Fighting Irish in South Bend on Dec. 9, 2014.

Sallah missed the 2015-16 season with an injury, but bounced back in 2016-17, reaching double figures in scoring 10 times and double digits in rebounding on three occasions. He grabbed 14 rebounds at No. 20 Iowa State on Nov. 14, 2016, and collected his first career double-double with 10 points and 15 rebounds against UMBC on Dec. 7, 2016, at Knott Arena.

Sallah attended Fishburne Military School in Waynesboro, Va., the same prep school that produced rising UNCW senior Jordon Talley, and powered the Caissons to a 25-7 record in 2013-14.

As a senior at Broadfording Christian Academy in Hagerstown, Md., Sallah averaged 18.0 points, 14.8 rebounds and 4.5 blocks while earning All-Waynesboro Herald-Mail honors.

UNCW has shared or won outright three consecutive CAA regular season championships and captured two straight CAA Tournament titles. The Seahawks went 29-6 in 2016-17 and set 63 new school records in one of the best seasons in CAA history.
