Kayla Thompson carded an even-par 72 to lead UNCW during the first round of the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational at the UNC Finley Golf Course on Friday afternoon.
The Seahawks finished the opening round in 17th place with a 303 team score. Duke holds the early lead after posting a 283 team score and has a one-shot lead over South Carolina.
Thompson holds a share of 24th place after firing four birdies in the first round, including back-to-back birdies on the 10th and 11th holes.

Thao My Nguyen is tied for 56th place after finishing the first round at three-over par while junior
Ellinoora Moisio and freshman
Rachael Mast are part of a tie for 75th place at six-over par.
Freshman
Caroline Cahill shot an eight-over par 80 in the first round for a share of 86th place.
