Seahawks Close Homestand With Sunday Split

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Freshman infielder Hannah Adamczyk collected four hits, including a pair of doubles, and drove in four runs as UNCW closed out its season-opening homestand by splitting a pair of games against Virginia and Radford at the Seahawk Softball Showcase at Boseman Field on Sunday afternoon.

The Seahawks, who finished the homestand with a 12-6 mark, outlasted Virginia by an 8-7 count in 12 innings before dropping a 6-3 decision against Radford. In the final game of the tournament, Virginia edged Radford, 3-2.

Adamczyk led the Seahawks to the victory over Virginia by going 3-for-6 with a double and three RBI. She also added a double and another run driven in against Radford.

Junior outfielder Merritt Wilkinson also contributed three hits and two runs scored for the Seahawks while three other players posted a pair of hits.

Junior Peyton Jordan claimed the victory in the circle against Virginia after allowing just one unearned run in three innings of relief with a strikeout. She also gave up one earned run in three innings against Radford, but received a no-decision.  

How It Happened vs. Virginia: After the teams each tallied four runs in the first three extra innings, UNCW claimed the victory with one out in the bottom of the 12th inning when Adamczyk hit an RBI single through the left side.   

How It Happened vs. Radford: Radford overcame a 3-2 deficit by scoring four runs in the top of the sixth inning, including a solo home run by junior Kayla Bishton to lead off the inning.   

Inside the Box Scores: The Seahawks were 14-for-24 in advancement opportunities against Virginia … UNCW forced Virginia into 20 ground ball outs … Virginia was 20-for-34 in advancement opportunities, but just 1-for-13 with two outs … UNCW was 2-for-7 with runners in scoring position against Radford, but 2-for-2 with a runner on third base.

#SeahawkStats: The Seahawks' 12-inning contest against Virginia was their longest game since Apr. 28, 2013, when UNCW edged Drexel, 3-1, in 13 innings … Junior infielder Nella Chamblee had her streak of consecutive games reaching base safely snapped at 13 games against Radford … Adamczyk led the Seahawks with a .429 batting average in four games this weekend with six RBI and three doubles.

Up Next for the Seahawks: UNCW plays its first road games of the 2016 campaign on Wednesday, Mar. 9, by visiting Winthrop for a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
