Seahawks Look To Shuffle Purple Aces In Nashville

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Less than 20 hours after a tough opening game in the Challenge In Music City, the UNCW men's basketball team battles Evansville on Saturday in their second game of the grueling tourney at historic Nashville Municipal Auditorium.

The contest begins at 6 p.m. Eastern and will be the first meeting between the two mid-major standard bearers. Middle Tennessee State and Toledo tangle in the nightcap at 8:30 p.m.

The Seahawks, 3-1, suffered their first loss of the season late Friday in a 68-63 decision to Middle Tennessee State after committing 18 turnovers and watching the Blue Raiders shoot 60 percent from the floor.

In Friday's defeat, delayed by Evansville's double overtime thriller vs. Toledo, junior guard Giddy Potts and senior forward JaCorey Williams combined for 38 points to lift MTSU over the Seahawks.

Potts went 9-of-13 from the floor and added a pair of free throws for a game-high 22 points for the Blue Raiders. Williams made 8-of-12 shots for 16 points and Reggie Upshaw chipped in 12 points for MTSU, which shot 60 percent on the night.

Senior guard Denzel Ingram was one of two Seahawks in double figures with 19 points. Senior guard Chris Flemmings finished with 14 points in 40 minutes for UNCW.

Williams scored 14 of his 16 points in the first half to carry the Blue Raiders to a 35-29 advantage at intermission before Potts took over after the break. The bulky Potts scored 15 of his 22 points in the final period as MTSU held off UNCW down the stretch.

The Seahawks are now 2-4 in games played in Nashville through the years and 13-10 against opponents from the state of Tennessee.

Evansville, meanwhile, fell to Toledo, 83-79, in Friday's tournament opener in a see-saw affair, overshadowing a stellar performance by senior guard Jaylon Brown, who poured in 39 points on 14-of-28 shooting. The wild game featured 13 ties and 13 lead changes.

While the Seahawks are meeting the Purple Aces for the first time, UNCW does stand 3-5 against Indiana schools and 6-8 vs. the Missouri Valley  Conference. Head Coach Kevin Keatts is facing an Indiana opponent for the first time since taking over the UNCW program three years ago.
