Seahawks Test Spelling Skills To Help CFLC

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – For the first time in its 12 years of involvement, UNCW had two teams competing in the Cape Fear Literacy Council's Spelling Bee for Literacy late Thursday night. And for the first time, a Seahawk team advanced to the fourth round.

The volleyball and men's golf teams represented the Seahawks in the 28th annual event, which was held at The Terraces on Sir Tyler. Longtime supporter Wayne Jackson has now sponsored every team in UNCW's portfolio since the women's basketball squad debuted in 2004.

More than 20 teams from the community competed in Thursday's bee, raising money for CFLC and its work.  Founded in 1970 as the Wilmington Literacy Group, the CFLC has expanded over the past 45 years, recruiting, training, and certifying over 2,000 volunteer tutors and helping more than 3,500 adult learners in the area.

The volleyball team's entry, the "Stellar Spellerz," featured senior Meredith Peacock , junior Nicole Lott,   sophomore Sydney Brock and freshman Halle Hunt.  Junior Preston Harrington, junior Thomas Lilly, sophomore Ross Robison and sophomore Thomas Eldridge competed for "The Finessors" of the men's golf team.

The volleyball team swept into the fourth round by correctly spelling "competent," " broccoli" and "xenophobia" before falling on "troika." The men's golf team correctly spelled "vandal" in the opening round before missing "behemoth."
